What to Wear to Your Family Session

One of the coolest parts about my job is that I get to meet SO many amazing new people from it. Like the sweet Brenning family that you see here. A lot of my families are repeat clients over the years, but this was my first time getting to meet and work with them! Right before their family session they had just recently welcomed their second son, and he was still so fresh and tiny at their session! My own son is 2 now and I miss those sweet early days, so it makes me so happy whenever I get to work with precious little newborns!

What to Wear

Something that I send to every single one of my clients is my style guide. It helps you plan your photo session outfits with pages of information on what to wear, tons of inspiration photos, and I even go into detail on the things you should avoid wearing too! When the Brennings showed up for their family session at one of my absolute favorite locations in Prescott, my first thought was that they totally knocked it out of the park with their outfits and following the style guide advice!

My shooting and editing style that I am known for is very bright and airy, so to get that more romantic style of session, that includes those ‘light’ and ‘airy’ colors, your outfit choice has a huge impact! Because of this, I always recommend soft pastels or neutral colors, like blushes, tans, light pinks, faint blues, creams, and whites. These types of colors will always result in more of a light and airy look in your images. Not only that, but all of these neutral colors pair well together so your family’s outfits don’t clash. They also do not reflect color onto the skin that can be difficult to edit out, like bright red or orange clothing can do! Neon colors like that, are also distracting and take the focus away from where it should be: which is you!

For her, something I always recommend to get more of that soft, romantic, look is long flowing dresses and skirts. These bring extra movement and dimension to your photos and we can get beautiful twirling or ‘swishing’ shots. And for the guys, khaki or light grey dress pants also help to make the images bright as possible over dark jeans.

Style Guide

It can be so overwhelming trying to coordinate outfits for the whole family (as a mama myself, I know from experience!). That’s why I created my style guide to help take at least one thing off your plate when it comes to trying to plan for your portrait session. When you book a session with me, I send it to you immediately after booking so you can start planning right away!

My guide is filled with pages of more in-depth information, but hopefully these images of the Brenning’s family session can at least help give you some ideas and spark some inspiration on what to wear to your next portrait session!
